Description
The Band 3 (AE1, SLC4A1) membrane protein is found in red blood cells and in kidney where it functions as an electro-neutral chloride/bicarbonate exchanger. Primary distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) caused by mutations of the SLC4A1 gene, which encodes for erythroid and kidney isoforms of anion exchanger, shows marked difference in inheritance patterns and clinical features in different parts of the world. Distal renal tubular acidosis caused by missense mutations in kidney isoform of anion exchanger 1 (kAE1/SLC4A1), the basolateral membrane Cl(-)/HCO3(-) exchanger of renal alpha-intercalated cells, has been extensively investigated in heterologous expression systems
